ITINERARY:

8 Days Educational Tour
Day 1: Amboseli National Park

You will be picked up from the Airport or Hotel by our Safari Driver/Guide to start off your adventure. Drive to Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is part of the Savannah plains with a high population of both bird and animal species. Amboseli has a mixed topography of plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps and marshes. The diversity, along with a long dry season, ensures excellent viewing of the large concentrations of African Animals living in this natural habitat. Amboseli offers some of the best opportunities to see African animals because its vegetation is sparse due to the long dry months. This is the only park where Africa’s tallest Mt. Kilimanjaro acts as a back drop while on a game drive. The view of this mountain when the clouds open out is spectacular! Arrive at your lodge / camp in time for lunch.  Take on your afternoon game drive until sunset ensuring to capture every arising opportunity!

Tsavo National Park
Day 2: Amboseli National Park

On this day, you will wake up and have a relaxed time to enjoy your breakfast. After your breakfast, this

will be a day of a cultural adventure! The Maasai have been known to habitat around the Kenyan wilderness for a very long time due their culture and lifestyle of being nomads and hunters. Their rich culture is the one of the remaining African culture’s that not even the influence of the western world has been able to change it. They are known of their distinctive custom and dress. You will visit a typical Maasai village and just enjoy the day as you spent time going through this unique culture. You will mingle with the morans who will take you through their lifestyle. Meet the beading women and learn how they do their beading and their ornaments and meaning of the different ornaments they wear. They will take you through their everyday lifestyle. Enjoy a Maasai song and dance together with them and the highlight of the day compete with the Morans to do the Maasai Jump and establish if you can beat them to it! Lunch at the Lodge and later take on the afternoon until sunset

Tsavo National Park
Day 3: Amboseli – Tsavo West National Park

Depart Amboseli in the morning and drive to Tsavo West National Park.Tsavo West comprises of open grasslands, scrublands, acacia woodlands, belts of riverine vegetation and rocky ridges. Animal attractions here are the BIG FIVE and diverse plant and animal species. The major attraction in this park is the Mzima Springs and under water Hippo watching. En route game drive and afternoon game drive in this vast wilderness. Learn and visit the “Shetani Lava Flow” –  A black lava flow of eight kilometres, 1.6 kilometres wide and five meters deep, is the remains of volcanic eruptions. They were subject of tales among local communities who named the flow “shetani,” meaning evil in Kiswahili, after it spewed from the earth when it was just 240 years old.

Day 4: Tsavo West – Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East offers a vast and untapped arena of arid bush. It has the largest Elephant herds in Kenya. Its major attractions are Elephant in Eden (red Elephants wallowing in the red soil of Tsavo East), Aruba Dam, Mudanda Rock and Luggard Falls. Enter Tsavo East and continue with game viewing in Tsavo East National Park to check in at your Lodge. Later an afternoon game drive until sunset.

Day 5: Tsavo East – Kwale County

Depart Tsavo East and drive to the Coastal city of Mombasa and onwards to Kwale County to check in at Shimba Hills Lodge and enjoy the rest of the day at your pleasure. Shimba Hills Lodge is the only Tree Lodge withing Kenya’s Coastal Rain Forest!

Day 6: Nursery Tree planting and management

Shimba Hills Forest Guides (Shifoga) is a local community organization working in partnership with Kenya Forest Service and the Kenya Wildlife Service to support and educate the community on conservation. It’s scope in conservation include afforestation, tree nursery propagation, Wildlife conservation and Community & schools sensitization. This day therefore you will visit the Kenya Forestry service with the Shifoga team and learn how they plant, maintain and manage the various tree nurseries in the Forest. Have knowledge on the various trees in the nursery and their uses in conservation and to the community. Spend the day in this Forest reserve and just learn as much as possible. In the late afternoon you can chose to do an afternoon game drive in Shimba Hills National Reserve (Optional at an extra cost)

Day 7: Butterfly breeding and management

Butterfly farming around the Shimba Hills ecosystem has proven to be an important source of livelihood to some community members, through trade of butterfly products and as a potential tourist attraction aspect hence encouraging sustainable conservation. Meet the butterfly farmers in this community. Learn how and why butterfly farming! Know the different species of butterflies here and their importance. Learn all the stages of butterfly breeding! What do they do once this butterflies have matured! Enjoy the knowledge adventure!

Day 8: Eco Tourism and Nature Trail Management

The program is aimed at promoting responsible tourism by conserving nature while benefiting
the local community through offering excursions to the villages involving the local community’s traditions and cultural practices. Learn the practices of this community through their culture and heritage and how they have managed to align with responsible tourism through culture, lifestyle, etc. Visit the nature trail and learn the flora and fauna on this trail and purpose of preserving them.

Day 9: Primates monitoring & Human Wildlife conflict mitigation

Constant monitoring and data recording of plants species, primates’ species movements, mating and feeding grounds is essential information for our research purposes. Spend time with the Shifoga crew and learn and understand the Colobus monkey! Why preserve this species!

In the afternoon learn on human wildlife conflict mitigation – Together with relevant parties i.e. the Kenya wildlife Services (Kwale), Kenya Forest Services (Kwale) amongst others, Shifoga is engaged in finding possible measures, and implementing them with the aim of reducing the pressure of wild animals invading community farms. Learn and understand the methods they are implimenting to mitigate this conflicts e.g bee keeping, burning chilies etc!

Day 10: Community awareness & sensitization

The Shifoga crew, through constant meetings and trainings spreads the word on conservation to the communities living adjacent/around and benefiting from the resource (the Shimba hills forest), on how best and sustainably way they can utilize the resources and at the same time benefiting from them. Learn how they sensitize and educate the local community through Chief’s “Barazas” – A baraza is a call from the local leaders to the community for a gathering aimed at achieving a certain purpose. In the afternoon visit local schools that have been introduced to Wildlife conservation. Meet them in their school wildlife clubs and enjoy the conversations and discussions on wildlife and nature conservation. Be part of their wildlife conservation activities!

Day 11: SHELDRICK WAATERFALLS OR MAJIMOTO VILLAGE

This day chose to visit either the Sheldrick waterfalls located inside the Shimba Hills National reserve OR visit the Majimoto village! You need your walking shoes and energy. Trek down to the refreshing pool at the foot of the falls. Take in the dramatic scenery and the picturesque natural landscape OR drive to the “Majimoto”(meaning hot water) village in Kwale county and discover a village that is surrounded by natural hot water spurs! Totally in the middle of a small village are this hot water spurs and thus the name “majimoto” village. Spend time here enjoying the hot water spurs, visit the school close by and hear their story in relation to the hot spurs! Time allowing visit Ng’onzini Primary school and be part of their wildlife conservation story initiated and pioneered by the schools local teacher Salim Said Mwamasumbi. Meet the young tour guides of the school who have a passion for conservation who will guide you through their conservation project right next to the school. Visit the petrified wood pillar in the school built in honor of their teacher Salim who pioneered and initiated the development of the school via the school wildlife tortoise conservation club. Amazing story!

Day 12: Mombasa – Nairobi

“Lasting and Extra – Ordinary safari memories” Bid the the Coastal adventure “kwaheri” meaning “goodbye and depart to transfer either to Mombasa SGR train station or transfer to Moi International Airport from where you will depart to Nairobi. In Nairobi you will be met and transferred to own onward plans.
